About Our Office

The Student Advocate's Office (SAO) -- effectively the campus public defender -- is an executive, non-partisan office of the student government at UC Berkeley. We offer representation, help, and advice to any student or student group involved in a dispute with the University.

We provide assistance for a broad variety of problems, including conduct violations, grade disputes, enrollment issues, financial aid problems, establishment of residency, discrimination, and harassment. All assistance is free and confidential.

Fall 2011 Revisions of Conduct Process
Representatives from the Student Advocate's Office have been heavily involved in discussions to revise the campus code of conduct. The final recommendations for revisions were submitted in Summer 2011. The recommendations were accepted by Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost George Breslauer and are currently being implemented. See an Op-Ed published by our office in the Daily Californian for more information on the process. The full list of finalized recommendations can be accessed here. A matrix displaying progress on the implementation of the code revisions is accessible here
